Module 12 - Visual Aids to Navigation
Lighthouses and Other Structures
Active recall
Section 5 of 6
Explain the main idea from lighthouses and Other Structures in your own words.
Lighthouses are the most prominent visual aids. Each has a unique combination of colour scheme (daymark), light character, and sometimes a fog signal. They are charted with a star symbol and magenta 'flare' showing the light.
Other structures include beacons (fixed structures on rocks or shoals, may or may not be lit), light vessels (anchored ships with lights, used where a lighthouse cannot be built), and LANBY buoys (Large Automatic Navigation Buoys — replace light vessels in some locations).
Key points
- Lighthouses: unique daymark + light character + fog signal
- Beacons: fixed structures, may be lit or unlit
- Light vessels: anchored ships with powerful lights
- LANBY: Large Automatic Navigation Buoys replacing light vessels
