Rope Care and Handling: Chafe, UV Damage and Safe Loads
Inspect the entire accessible length and its terminations, not just the most visible section. Look and feel for cuts, heavy abrasion, glazing or melting, hard or flat areas, local stiffness, core exposure, chemical contamination, damaged splices and wear at clutches, winches, fairleads and cleats. Record or isolate a suspect line and follow the product maker's retirement criteria; apparent age alone does not prove condition.
Before loading a line, trace where it will lead and what could move or fail. No one should stand in a bight. Keep people clear of the line of pull, loaded turns and possible recoil or fitting-failure areas; a changed fairlead can change the danger area and the whole working deck may need to be treated as hazardous. Brief one person in charge, the intended sequence and simple commands before the operation starts.
Cleaning is not an automatic after-every-trip rule. Grit, salt or contamination may justify cleaning, but the method and frequency should follow the rope maker because washing itself causes some degradation and can change handling. Avoid unapproved chemicals and high heat, dry and store the line as directed, and retire or seek expert advice whenever its performance is in doubt.

Common questions
How should yacht ropes be inspected?
Inspect the full accessible length, cover or strands, core where it can be assessed, splices and other terminations, plus every recurring chafe and heat point. Feel as well as look, and compare findings with the maker's retirement guidance.
Should salt-water ropes always be washed after use?
No blanket interval fits every product. Clean when the condition and maker's guidance justify it, using the approved method and drying limits; unnecessary washing also causes some degradation.
Where is the snap-back zone?
Do not rely on one painted or remembered shape. The lead, fittings and possible failure mode change the danger area, so keep out of bights and loaded-line paths and treat the wider working deck cautiously.
