Module 2 - Ropework
Additional Useful Knots and Hitches
A sheet bend joins two rope ends and is commonly taught for ropes of unequal size: form the bight in the larger or stiffer rope and lead the other working end around it. A double sheet bend adds a turn but does not remove the need to check compatibility, dressing, tail length and whether a bend is acceptable for the load.
A clove hitch is quick for a temporary attachment such as a fender lanyard, but alternating or slack loading can let it work loose and critical use needs suitable backup or another method. A rolling hitch is intended to grip another line or spar in one direction. Its hold depends on the materials, diameter, direction and dressing, so it is not a promise that any small cord will grip any loaded modern rope.
An anchor bend is a traditional method for attaching rope to a ring, yet a real anchor rode may require a thimble, splice, shackle or manufacturer-specified termination. Choose from the complete system and expected load. When another line is already heavily loaded, control people and energy before attempting any transfer; the vessel-specific safe method takes priority over a remembered knot sequence.
| Need | Candidate | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Join two rope ends | Sheet bend or double sheet bend | Compatibility, tails and application still need checking |
| Fast temporary attachment | Clove hitch | Can work loose or slip with changing or intermittent load |
| Grip another line in one direction | Rolling hitch | Performance depends on direction, diameter, material and dressing |
| Attach an anchor warp at a ring | Anchor bend in a traditional arrangement | Use the rode and hardware maker's specified termination for the real system |
