Rule 8 — Action to Avoid Collision
Any action taken to avoid collision must be positive, made in ample time, and large enough to be readily apparent to the other vessel. Small, indecisive course changes are dangerous — the other vessel may not realise you are altering.
If there is sufficient sea room, a course alteration alone may be the most effective action. Avoid altering course to port for a vessel on your port side. Speed reduction (including stopping or reversing) is always available as an option.
Key Points
- Action must be POSITIVE and EARLY
- Course changes must be LARGE enough to be obvious
- Avoid altering to port for a vessel on your port side
